9 Important Things You Must Know About Your Partner Before Marriage...

If people can take out time to learn about marriages before stepping into them, our society will experience fewer incidences of turbulent and broken marriages. (VICKY UZIBOR)

1.       AGE: It is very important for you to know the age of your intending wife or husband before marriage. I know that some people specifically, ladies do lie about their age when it comes to marriage. This is at your own detriment because when the truth is eventually known there will be loss of trust.

2.       TEMPERAMENT: The issue is that human nature differs. Some are vibrant in speech and action while some are reserved and quiet. The issue of temperament here borders on whether the person is jovial and easy going or reserved or quiet. And you must not forget that it is opposite that attract or that are compatible.

3.       MARITAL STATUS: You must find out whether your partner is truly single or involved in another relationship previously or currently before saying yes to him or her. Again, telling lies is not helpful here because it will expose you to great dangers. Imagine a lady telling a man she is a virgin whereas she has a grown up daughter who has been forced to often address the mum as aunt in the presence of the man because of the skeleton in the cupboard. What do you think would happen when the man eventually discovers the truth? My advice to you is that when you are getting into marriage let your partners know everything about your life to avoid betrayal of trust later.

4.       RELOGIOUS BELIEF: It is expected of you to know the religious belief of your intending partner before accepting his or her hand in marriage. You must try and know whether he is a Muslim, Christian, Atheist or Traditionalist. You must be careful to study the person in addition to asking because some people do fake a particular religion that seems to be your interest just to marry their ‘target’ and thereafter assume their real self.

5.       MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD/OCCUPATION: You have to know the source of income of the person talking to you about marriage so that you will not be disappointed in a long run when it comes to the running of the home. And also to know if the source is genuine or not, so you don’t end up getting married to a ritualist or a criminal. 

6.       SPECIAL SECRET THAT MAY LATER CAUSE EMBARRASTMENT: These are some people suffering from one terminal disease or the other. This must be made known to your mate to avoid embarrassment. The value that you attach to personal money and property must also be made known to your mate.

7.       LEVEL OF EDUCATION: You must genuinely know your partner’s level of education to enable you know how to handle some challenges when occasion calls for that.

8.       BLOOD GROUP AND GENOTYPE: It is of utmost importance for you to know the blood group and the genotype of the person you intend getting married to. This is to avoid the risk of giving birth to sickling children or sickle cell anaemia victims in case you don’t have the right combination with the person.

9.       Others include each others ethnic background, sexual expectations, each others family size and other information that might be useful to the relationship.
